Seeds of Independence: African-Americans Working at Gunston Hall in the 20th Century
Sunday, February 7 • Program at 2:00 p.m.

** The Seeds of Independence program has been rescheduled due to snow for Sunday, February 14th at 2 p.m. **

A short film documents contributions of African-Americans who made Gunston Hall a showplace.  A presentation by Virginia Tech History Professor Peter Wallenstein places these everyday labors into a modern social context.  

Suggested Contribution: $9, Adults; $8, Seniors; $5, 6-18 years.

Presidents’ Day Sale
Monday, February 15 • 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Fearing that the President might become as powerful as a king, George Mason opposed the U.S. Constitution.  Take a Patriot & Planter mansion tour and debate this issue with Mason himself.   In the hearth kitchen, savor foods enjoyed by Mason and Presidential contemporaries.   

Special sale rate at $4/person.  Friends free.

Liberty Lecture Series
Giving Voice to the Voiceless
Sundays February 28, March 7 and 14  •  3:00 p.m.

Mason wrote that “all men are born equally free and independent.” Did he mean all mankind?  This series will give voice to those typically muted in 18th-century liberty debates: women and people of color.

Regular admission.  Friends free.
Teacher recertification credit.  Refreshments at 2:30 p.m.  Call 703-550-9220 to register.

Kite Festival
Saturday, March 20 •  noon – 5:00 p.m.

Come fly a kite in our pastures.  Write with a quill pen, see period puppet shows, sample hearth cooking, explore a modern fire truck, chat with characters from the past, purchase spring plants.  Bring a picnic or buy one here.  Kites available for sale.  

$10, adults; $6, for ages 6-18; $2, children 2-5 years.  $25 Family Admission.


Events do not require a reservation unless specifically stated.  The calendar is subject to change.  A 30-minute mansion tour is part of all public programs.  Tours are offered from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
